Customer Notification Regarding Customer Owned Gas Service Lines

Gas Department/Customer Responsibilities

The City of Sugar Hill Gas Department is responsible for maintaining the gas lines that deliver natural gas to the meter at your home. You are responsible for maintaining the gas lines from the meter to the natural gas-burning appliances throughout your home. Don't forget that you may have gas lines extending to yard lights, grills, pool heaters, and garage or workshop heaters that are the responsibility of the homeowner to maintain.

Most meters are set close to the house. The City of Sugar Hill maintains the gas lines from the street to the meter and only monitors the visible piping from the meter to the house for corrosion and leaks. Maintenance of that piping is the homeowner’s responsibility.

Any natural gas piping not monitored by the City of Sugar Hill Gas Department should be inspected annually for leaks with metal piping monitored for corrosion. If gas lines become corroded or leak, you could have a potentially dangerous and costly situation.

To have your pipes inspected by a trained technician, contact an HVAC contractor.

Natural Gas Safety At Home

To burn properly, natural gas mixes with just the right amount of air to be ignited by a spark or a flame. Natural gas that burns without enough air produces a deadly gas – carbon monoxide.

Breathing natural gas is harmful because it contains no oxygen. And because natural gas is colorless and odorless, a chemical with a distinct smell is added to alert you of a leak. The added odor smells like rotten eggs.

Teach all members of your family the three ways to recognize a natural gas leak, so they will know what to do.

LOOK…  Blowing dirt, bubbling in creeks or pomnds, dry spots in moist areas or dead plants surround by green live ones could indicate a leak…

LISTEN…  A hissing sound near gas lines, meters or appliances could indicate a leak…

SMELL…  If you smell the rotten egg odor there could be a leak…

LEAVE… Leave the premises immediately.

TELL…  Be sure to tell authorities – notify 911 or City of Sugar Hill at 770-945-6716.

A faint odor of gas may mean that a pilot light has gone out and should be relit; however, a strong odor means you should leave the home at once and call your local utility or emergency personnel from a neighbors home.

Call Before You Dig:

The City of Sugar Hill provides natural gas to more than 9,000 customers through a network of underground distribution lines. Main gas lines branch into household service lines. The pipes are typically made of “caution yellow” plastic or tar-coated steel which helps prevent corrosion. As an industry steel pipes are being replaced with the more durable plastic piping. The main lines are typically 2-inches in diameter and are located roughly two-feet below the surface, while service lines are typically half-inch to three-quarter-inch in diameter and buried just 12 to 18-inches below the surface. That is why it is important to “Call Before You Dig”, or move earth in any way.

Yellow Flags:

Yellow flags have been placed in my yard. What does that mean?
