Soil Composting & Spring Gardening Classes

Soils & Composting - February 23rd - 7:00 to 8:30 pm. This class will cover the importance of having soils that produce healthy plants and practical methods of composting. There is no charge for the class but pre-registration is required by Tuesday, February 21st, 2012.

Spring Vegetable Gardening - March 22nd - 7:00 to 8:30 pm. Come and learn about the many vegetables that can be grown in our area and how to properly care for them to produce a bountiful harvest. There is no charge for this class but pre-registration is required by Tuesday, March 20th, 2012.

Gary Pirkle Park Community Garden
Reserve Your Plot Today

With the first day of spring less than one week away, it is time to start thinking about this year’s garden; specifically registering for a plot in the Gary Pirkle Park Community Garden.

The Community Garden is located at Gary Pirkle Park on Austin Garner Road in Sugar Hill. Registration begins March 1st for both the Seasonal and Annual Gardeners.

The Seasonal Gardener fee is $25 and gardening is allowed March 1st through October 31, 2011. The Annual Gardener fee is $35 and gardening is allowed March 1st through February 28, 2012. There is also a seperate refundable deposit of $50.00. This deposit is refunded to you, ONLY if all rules are followed.

The gardener fee includes one 5 x 10 plot, limited storage space and irrigation from stream. Each of the open sites enjoy all-day sun.

Residents who are interested in staking a plot in our Community Garden should complete and return their application today. Plots are assigned on a first come first serve basis, with priority given to Sugar Hill residents.

Community Garden Rules:

  1. Plots are assigned on a first come first serve basis with priority given to Sugar Hill residents.
  2. The garden hours will be from sunrise to sunset.
  3. Please respect other plots and others that may be using the park.
  4. We ask that tall crops are not planted in such a way that it shades surrounding plots.
  5. Please respect and take care of all tools, equipment, and facilities.
  6. The garden is intended for fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs ONLY.
  7. No illegal plants, pets, alcoholic beverages, or illegal substances are permitted.
  8. Please control all weeds, grass, trash, and litter in your plot area, including the walkway surrounding your plot.
  9. If a plot is unkempt, the city will issue a warning with 14 days to clean up your plot. If after 14 days no action has been taken to clean up your area, your plot will be reassigned and your $50 deposit will be kept by the City.
  10. Use of granular fertilizers is permitted only in designated plots.
  11. The use of any pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides is prohibited.
  12. Please do not harvest, water, or tend to another gardeners plot without prior permission.
  13. Please place trash and unwanted plant materials in designated containers/areas.
  14. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
  15. No smoking or chewing tobacco in the garden area.
  16. No vehicles allowed into the garden area. Please park in the designated parking lot. Vehicles with GARDEN PARKING PERMITS ONLY!
  17. Please keep loud noises to a minimum.
  18. Rules and policies are subject to change at any time. The City reserves the right to reclaim your plot for failure to comply with the above rules.
